The Role of Foreign-invested Enterprises in the Chinese Economy: an Institutional Foundation Approach

In 1999, the Chinese government reported a foreign direct investment (FDI) inflow in the amount of $40.4 billion.1 This was a sharp drop from $45.6 billion in 1998, and government officials and economic analysts have begun to voice concerns about the economic effects of FDI contraction for China. Indeed, one of the alleged benefits associated with the impending Chinese membership in the World Trade Organization is to stem the contractionary FDI trend.
